Áine Ryan

Biography

Based in West Waterford, my visual art practice focuses on the interchange between notions of belonging, place, identity and memory. Working with various materials, specifically cast glass, I turn to my farming background and rural upbringing to create sculptural work. In 2021, I graduated from Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork with BA (hons) in Contemporary Applied Art in Glass, Ceramics, and Textiles. I was awarded the National Sculpture Factory 3 Month Graduate Residency, M.T.U. CCAD Glass Residency, and the Annual Executive Prize. Since graduating, I have been selected to exhibit in a number of group shows and been shortlisted for the D.C.C.I. Future Makers Award 2021.

Artist Statement

I am an emerging visual artist from Co. Waterford. I am trying to figure ‘it’ all out; by ‘it’ I mean my place in the world. A cancer diagnosis in my late twenties shifted the ground beneath my feet, yet it was the land and the landscape of our family farm that helped in my recovery. Since returning to education in my mid-thirties, I have used art and making as a means to understand my personal experiences and often it is materials and objects from the rural that help me do that. My art practice focuses on the interchange between notions of belonging, place, identity, and memory. I use various materials in my work including cast glass and textiles.
