Stephen Brandes’ practice crosses several artistic disciplines including painting, drawing, video and sculpture. Representational forms and styles from contradictory elements of art history are thrown into conflicting proximity, to present a body of work that travels the space between comedy and tragedy. Brandes’ recent sculptural work, executed within the NSF included a large walk-through architectural collage built from various timbers, as an homage to the German artist, Kurt Schwitters whose own attempts at the same were variously destroyed through the course of his lifetime.
