Artist in Focus: Mollie Anna King

Mollie Anna King is a graduate of Crawford College of Art and Design where she received her B.A. (Hons.) in Fine Art and an MFA in sculpture from the Slade School of Fine Art. Following her degree show in 2010, Mollie was awarded the NSF’s Graduate Bursary award. Since then she has been the recipient of the Land Securities Residency Award and the Barto dos Santos Memorial Award.

Her work is concerned with cycles, destruction/creation through repetition and the questioning of passive viewing. The structures and installations created focus on movement within sculpture and the personification of these structures by deterioration of their materials. By means of interfering with the longevity of the structure, King considers the idea of utopia and architectural impermanence. By exploring the physical in static objects through performative structures, the work seeks to discuss entropic processes and the idea of collapse as a representation of a somatic slapstick inevitability.
